Heading to Florida for a missions conference, our transmission went out and almost left us stranded on I75 south in Gainesville, FL. I was able to drive around 20 mph until we reached the dealership.
Sean was the young man working in the service department at a dealership I had the privilege of meeting that day. With many situations like that, I was in a great hurry to get things done so we could get to the meeting, so small talk was the last thing on my mind. However, Sean was full of conversation.
He asked me why I was dressed up, and where I was headed so far from home. A little flippantly, I told him that I was a missionary to South Africa and we were headed to a meeting to present our ministry. Then, his demeanor changed instantly. His smile turn to a slight frown, and he then asked me a question that instantly brought conviction to my heart.
Sean asked, “Sir, would you remember me as you pray? Will you think of me when you preach?” The Holy Spirit rebuked my lack of interest in conversation, and reminded me why transmissions go out when they go out; for opportunities just like this!!
Sean shared with me how he had been raised in church by a godly mother, but for many years had strayed from his upbringing and from God. The Lord had already been dealing with him, and I almost missed an opportunity to encourage this young man. Thankfully, the Lord allowed us to pray together in his office just before leaving and that smile returned to his face, and mine!
I say all that to say, may we never miss an opportunity to share Christ and encourage others, regardless of our personal circumstances! God used that in my life that day to remind me of His providence and sovereignty! He knew exactly what Sean needed; He knew exactly what I needed!
