Gen. 15:6 “And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.”
Abram (Abraham) was saved the same way as you and I; by faith! There were no works involved. There was no sacrifice made. He simply believed God and His promise, and it was counted to him for righteousness.
In this passage, we also see the Abrahamic Covenant; God’s promise to Abraham that his seed would be multiplied, that his seed would be blessed, and that God would provide them a land!
This covenant was an unconditional one, and we see this by Abram being asleep! Gen. 15:12 “And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.”
God in His omniscience knew that Abram could not keep his end of the covenant, so he put him to sleep; and in verse 17 we see a smoking furnace and a burning lamp passing between the pieces for the offering, signifying God making covenant with God on behalf of Abram!
Thanks be to God that our relationship with Him does not rely on us perfectly living up to His perfect standard! Surely, there are none that could. Romans 3:10 “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:” Only through Christ can our relationship to the Creator being reunited. Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
I hope that as you read this, if the question remains in your mind; “how can I know for sure that I have eternal life?” that you will take the verses above, place your trust in the work Christ has already done (death on the cross) and call upon Him today! Romans 10:13 “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Christians; I hope that you will be encouraged today to share this message with someone you might meet, and allow God to use you for the furtherance of the Gospel!
